What is the best choice as a fast reliable router with no frills?

Faced with "paralysis of choice" when looking for a router.
I want to get a router (by the way, the very concept of a router is not completely transparent to me) that could provide, first of all, a fast wired connection on a local network.
There are thoughts of making a kind of network storage in the local network, and therefore I would like its performance not to run into the network much earlier than other elements of the system. Those. So that the network, if it was the weakest link in this system, then at least not by a huge margin. If I understand correctly and it would be possible to get at least half of the gigibit promised by some routers, it will be nice
. Also, this router should distribute Wi-Fi well: far and fast.
Those. As I understand it, I need a router with gigabin ports. How to properly evaluate wi-fi is not entirely clear.
In general, I’m not very interested in additional functions, it is planned to do this file storage outside the router (I mean that some routers offer this functionality).
Upper limit: no more than 5000 but preferably 1500-3000. Of course, less is possible :)
Internet provider: Ufanet, pptp (setting on Win 7)
Is it worth re-flashing the router? How?
I would like to read on this topic as well. If there are any really good articles or even books on this topic that will help you understand the characteristics of routers and other similar network equipment, I will be glad to have links :)

Not a bad model Linksys EA2700
From the set-and-forget series. The ports give out an honest gigabit, you can set up two independent wi-fi networks for 5 and 2.4 GHz.
A good book is certainly Tanenbaum "Computer Networks" .

If network storage is network storage, not USB, wired computer - then why a cool router?
Take " just a router " and a gigabit switch .
The router will provide access to the Internet and WiFi, the switch - quick access to the storage via wire. Connect the router to the switch with a wire, other equipment - with wires to the switch.
