Can you please tell me what the PayPal software is based on? Is it a web-based application or something else?
How do these technologies work? (how does the site / security systems / data storage interact?) Is there anything more modern than this technology?

Paypal currently uses java ee. But before they had their own solutions, like written on crosses.
