What is better to put on an old computer?

Guys! What is better to put on an old computer?
Systems:
CPU type DualCore Intel Core 2 Duo E4400, 2000 MHz (10 x 200)
System memory 2048 MB (DDR2-667 DDR2 SDRAM)
Video adapter NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT (256 MB)
Operating system Microsoft Windows 10 Professional
Costs a dozen because I I thought that the newest Windows is the lightest C:
but the computer is loaded by 80-90% with Skype and Chrome
I looked at the systems of Windows 8.1 and 10, they turned out to be similar I
thought about Linux, but the parents' computer and they are unlikely to want to adapt to it

Firetheestle I see two options:
1. Put the Seven, but not pro and not the maximum. The simplest, surfing the internet and watching movies is enough. Disable Windows Aero after installation. I have on an old beech (also 2GB of RAM) 7 eats a maximum of 500 mb, everything else is eaten by chrome ...
2. Elementary OS. I tried it, it doesn’t eat much, it’s simple and convenient for users.

SSD. The cheapest in Walmart, as far as I know.

7 ka or ubunt, it all depends on what they run there, if only skype and the ubunt browser are two shortcuts on the table and everything is simple

try adding memory and replacing the disk with an SSD - the computer will work quite well for the parents until it fails.
The brakes, quite possibly, are due to the new technology in the 10-ke, which is characterized as "downloaded the update - share with others" Immediately chop off this heresy.
Also, a configured onedrive, regardless of your pain, will update everything that is on the disk from the start.
In general, open the monitoring of system resources (through the task manager) and find out who spoils you so much (memory load, disk, cpu, network). Dig around the Internet for disabling various synchronizations and sending information to MS. A test machine with a browser and Skype (and also a remote connection to a terminal server) works just fine for me with your configuration (only more memory and a built-in video card)

I quickly transplanted my mother-in-law to linux: "either you will use the system normally - or you will delete another virus without my participation!"
How cut.
It costs Debian 8.1 with LXDE.
VPN just threw in case the printer is installed, etc.

I now have a couple of chrome windows takes almost a gig. Here is the answer for you: the OS is not very important if you open Chrome and Skype under it (they found the most lightweight ones ).
Well, on the question of what to put ... LEGS ! In general, Linux is great for parents when "press 2 buttons, there will be Skype or the Internet" (although Skype has been under the curve all its life, but now there is a web version). No viruses etc. True, there may be troubles with the office. You can of course 10-ku, but you are unlikely to speed it up much, because. the problem is most likely in the memory, and now you probably won’t find DDR2 (for sane money).

If parents do not want to adapt, then you can install Zorin OS (based on Ubuntu). The distribution looks like Windows, so it will be easy to learn.
If they still want, then Ubuntu or CentOS.

I have lubuntu 15 on my 2008 laptop. And everything suits me. Works. I have enough. It is necessary, of course, to proceed from the tasks that the computer has to perform.

Put the seven and do not worry, at the same time the size of the C: increase.
Disable AERO, parents don't need frills, and it will save RAM.
Disable the services too, the same "print manager" if there is no printer.
I disagree a little with KJIayD and recommend PRO.

Install windows 7 for the Asus eee900 netbook (you can find it on the torrent) and everything will fly, although it is 32 bits, but with 2GB of memory, I don’t think that the processor will fully reveal its potential by 64 bits. On this seven, turn on virtual memory, it is disabled by default and enjoy life! And when buying an ssd, the PC will live a completely different life, I know by myself we have similar PCs, only I have 4 GB of RAM.

Install an SSD and add two more gigabytes of RAM. Win7/8 will work fine.

Almost the same configuration (also updated to 10), only 4 gigabytes of RAM, everything works fine. So I join the rest - add 2, or better 4 gigabytes of RAM, and it will be enough for another four years for sure. And the fact that chrome eats everything is to say thanks to the javascript and developers. Close your tabs :)

A month ago, install Xubuntu 14 x86 for mom. Proc is the same current of RAM 1GB and video is integrated. Set up skype, chrome, etc. Before it stood win XP.
Everything works just fine. There is no difference for using Skype and the Internet, except for the more advanced Skype interface.

Parents only surf the Internet and play card games like "1000", "Solitaire" or "Worm"
Are there similar games in Linux or will you have to look for them and make them through Wine?

2 years ago there was almost 1 in 1 the same computer, the vidos model is the same only 500mb, the RAM is 3 giga because I didn’t see 4 bios, the percentage is the same (lazy shelesyaka), in general, I drove a Jedi unreleased 2 on that computer (the graph there is super ), and headlight edge 3, nfs bridge vanted, etc., the computer was taken out, provided that through the d.z. I chopped off everything superfluous, well, in chrome, for example, I cut off such a function that after closing it plows in the background, and in winter it was not bad to warm my legs near the system unit =)) , set wine 7 to the maximum speed and don’t worry, everything is rushing, I even aero-style did not turn off
