What is Amazon EC2 and will it work for my purposes?

I need to deploy several virtual machines with different operating systems (windows, ubuntu), and one more with OSSIM (something like IDS systems). Is it possible to do this on this hosting and is it generally designed for this or does it perform some other task? And if it will be possible to run three virtual machines on it, can I connect them to each other?
