What happens if the voltage is applied to the microcontroller more than specified?

For example, the MSP430G2x44 datasheet says Low Supply Voltage Range: 1.8 V to 3.6 V. If you apply, say, 4 volts or even 4.5, what will happen? Will the microcontroller burn out?

It might burn out. If it works, it will heat up and degrade faster.
