What files should be on github?

Hello!
For experienced comrades, my question will probably seem silly, but I’ll ask it nonetheless)
So I made up the site and decided that I needed to put it on github. So:
1. In the master branch, there must be source code, incl. folder with preprocessor files (Less)?
2. what do you need to use github pages? I created another gh-pages branch, but it gave me a 404 error.
Please look at the profile, otherwise I feel like I’ve piled up nonsense (

@Irissska89

according to the project structure, to each his own, for example:
/public/ - here is the compiled project (only needed for github pages)
/source/ - here is the project in its original form (less, html, js, fonts, img, ... - all of which the project is compiled)
readme.md - description of the
index.html repository - here you can redirect to the public folder or leave the layout map (if there are a lot of pages)
