What file system to choose for an old laptop?

I put Linux, here are the possible options.
For important files I use a Yandex disk, so the reliability of fs is not as important as the speed of work.
EXT4
EXT3
EXT2
btrfs
JFS
XFS
FAT16..32

EXT4 with the journal turned off will probably be the fastest.
And add relatime mount options, nodiratime
FAT has many restrictions and no file attributes. Right past.
btrfs: cow, 50/50 checksums for an old laptop is probably not the best choice.
UPD added SOTVM recommendations for mount options.

ext4 with relatime, nodiratime mount options (add these options to fstab)
so as not to unnecessarily load the disk system

If the hardware is really tired and there are no special requirements for the OS, then NTFS and the seven.

If the hardware is too old, then why Linux? From personal preference? Maybe XP is better?

As far as I tried different distributions on old computers, changing the file system, mount parameters (well, maybe just a little bit) never gave me a special increase in speed, but changing the shell gives a lot. KDE/Gnome/XFCe/Cinnamon/LXDE and many more to choose from. The basic rule is simple - use the distribution that was popular or developed at the time that the same old hardware was in use. On a dual core and 0.5-1Gig of RAM, we install KDE2, or Cinnamon, or something simpler - xfce for example. On a single-core celeron or some atom, I installed meego (I don’t remember what shell it is, but it’s very light), and linux mint (older versions of course). Yes, in principle, such advice is full of Internet.
PS It is not necessary to put it on an SD card, and turn on logging - here there can be wild brakes ... I got caught myself once.
