I want to buy an e-book on ebay, but I can't find a good price/quality ratio.

Advise, any within $300.

If you need a reader, then either Kindle or Nook. The first one out of the box will be better, but the second one is on android, and there are already firmwares that provide additional features.
As for me, I used Nook (old) until I planted it :( Now I bought Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight - the same simple touch, only with built-in backlight (and, I tell you, much more convenient than a flashlight in low light conditions) .

I bought myself all four at that time (November 2011) famous books: amazon kindle , amazon kindle touch , sony t1 , b&n nook simple touch . I even wanted to write a comparative article on Habr, but somehow it didn’t work out (problems with Russian mail and customs and, as a result, receiving books only in February), only photographs and a lot of raw text remained.

Yes, I stopped at the simplest kindle - you don’t need anything else to read, the battery lives for a very long time. If you want to play with android inside, then it's better to take nook or sony, plus they are more designer or something: the first is brutal, but the second is cute (besides, there are three colors to choose from).
Now, perhaps the best choice is a backlit nook (actually, because of it), but something (a ~~Martian in my head~~ ) tells me that amazon will answer with dignity! In a couple of months.
In general, take kindle - imbue with ideology, and as soon as a new kindle comes out (with backlight and increased screen resolution, and look at the color e-link), feel free to migrate without migraines (actually, I will do that).
NB Yes, if you want to spend exactly $300, then there is only one option - sony prs-950 , because kindle dx would be better without a keyboard (IMHO).

One and a half months used Kindle 4. Inconvenient. Went back to the old Nook. The day before yesterday, however, he crashed.
Therefore, probably, Nook Simple Touch, indeed, will be the best choice.
