What domain to use for the English version of the site?

There is a site in the .ru domain zone (conditionally site.ru). There was a desire to make it an English version. From the point of view of SEO, is an address like en.site.ru or site.ru/en/ suitable for such purposes? Or does the site need to move to a different domain zone, such as .com rather than .ru?

Google, like Yandex, fully understands / en / ru, but FOR EACH VERSION, YOU NEED TO SPECIFY THE LANGUAGE. Including in titles and meta tags.
