Worked as a programmer and tester. The second is more interesting. And it's more important for business.
Let me give you an example:
* The vendor has expended efforts, developed firmware, programs, designers have come up with everything well, and now you are in the store and hold in your hands a mobile phone that you have been waiting for a long time and wanted to buy. Suddenly you realize that you want to share the joy with your wife / girlfriend / friend, you are trying to make a call and the phone does not ring!
Question: Will it mean anything to you as a user in terms of development? Will you buy it knowing that it does not ring?
In other words: The tester has the right to impose a weighty word "I would not issue a product for release." In the case of strong arguments, read the tasks with a description of serious errors. Product-Owner will take his words into account.
The history of IT knows how Intel changed processors due to an error in calculating real numbers. This is a huge loss for companies!
Yes. As a developer, I perfectly understand the idea "in order to sell something, you need to do something," but it is much more important that this "something" be of proper quality, otherwise all efforts will go nowhere!
No, really, what difference does it make to you how many design patterns, algorithms or idioms were used in the development if the product does not work? Personally, when I take a mobile, I check its work on the main functions and in which case I take another model, possibly another vendor!
So testing is so important! Yes, and there is also a lot of programming there, because. checking everything manually is a utopia

And what does the work of a programmer include and is it worth it?
Too general question for too vague concept.
Testing is a large layer of work (manual, automated, desktop application testing, web application testing, mobile application testing, etc.).
In a nutshell, testing is the verification of the correct operation of the application.
I advise you to read the book “Dot Com Testing” for general development.
And once and for all to learn that testing is not just clicking the mouse in search of errors, not just playing a game and finding errors.
