What you need to know and what you need to study in order to do test automation?

well... let's start with programming,
because, although many automation solutions contain different recorders and GUIs for creating autotests, no one considers serious automation on this.
So Java or Python (they are most often automated).
Well and, besides, automation of testing of what? Mobile phone, web, api, hardware?
The question is very vague
