What do designers learn?

The profession of a designer has always been incomprehensible to me in the sense that they also study it. What can you study in design? Isn't this a subjective concept? Some like blue, some like green. Suppose the design of Facebook is inferior to the current Vkontakte from my point of view, but I am sure that these same web designers also worked on the latter.

If you take only a narrow field of interface design on the web and talk about the concept of a "good designer", then there are many different topics that need to be mastered:

  • Psychology. You need to negotiate, understand what the customer wants, what the business needs, what the users need, and then do something.
  • General ideas about tone and color, composition, use of negative space, vertical/horizontal rhythms, etc.
  • Typography.
  • Ease of use (ease of consumption of content). You need to know the specifics of the practical application of interfaces, including different devices and screen sizes, different input devices, etc. You need to understand what users are used to and what they expect from the interface.
  • It will not be superfluous to understand the technical capabilities of browsers, technologies that are used in development. Not every concept can be taken and implemented just like that. It is also important to understand the skills of fellow layout designers. There are not as many people who can actually implement such things as it seems.
  • There are people with disabilities - you need to think about the accessibility of the interface for the visually impaired, color blind, people using only the keyboard, etc.
  • UX. This is generally a broad topic. Thoughtful micro-interactions make a good interface look good.
  • Generalization and systematization - you need to highlight the main components of the style, work them out in different versions, and divide the rest into components and depict each of them separately with all its states. Not every "artist" can make a good style guide.
  • It is clear that you need to have a certain set of tools for working with graphics (both raster and vector), with a large number of layouts, prototyping tools, etc.
  • About related areas - inventing the philosophy of the entire brand, logo design, merchandise, etc. I generally keep quiet.

Much. In theory, at least the composition and colors need to be understood. Those. that it is impossible to write in blue letters on a red background (I met this). There are also a lot of tools - photoshop, illustrator, corell, indesign, etc. Sometimes the animations are done by the same designers.

What can you study in design?

The basics of design are clear and simple - fonts, colors, composition, layout. It can be mastered quickly.
Difficulties in design are related to trends and selling yourself. Trends are constantly changing (not only because of fashion, but also because of the proliferation of new media), and customers will always want to save money.
