OpenWRT and its derivatives (which are the majority): ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenWrt
For models on chipsets similar to those used in Asus, you can use Oleg Firmware (a custom that originally appeared as an analogue for the WL-500W and the like) .
Or are OSes needed for more serious pieces of iron?
