What devices are best suited for implementing a smart home using raspberry pi?

What devices are best suited for implementing a smart home (do you plan to write an application for this case for remote control)?
I am considering schemes using raspberries as the "brain" of the house.
While googling this topic, I ran into several popular protocols: zigbee, z-wave.
I paid attention to the "devices" from noolite.
Also, xiaomi (which implement zigbee) looks extremely attractive with their smart technology, but I'm not sure that with the help of raspberry I can control it (I found api only for light).
According to z-wave, people like fibaro advise.
In general, advise the beginner. Thanks in advance.

Regarding devices
Here everything is limited only by your fantasies and tasks. To solve many problems, it is enough to have a certain number: stepper motors, motion sensors, range sensors, cameras, gas sensors, light sensors, humidity and temperature sensors, wires, WIFI modules.
In general, with such a set + soldering iron + free time = you can automate a lot of things at home.
As an example:
Look also towards Blynk . For a specific sharpening for your needs, you will have to write a couple of lines of code here and there, but the solution is good and stable. It also works not only with Raspberry Pi, but also with Arduino and many others.
The solution is also better because you can organize your own server and completely get rid of their server, which generally serves to simplify this step.
Of the other pluses: it has an application for both iOS and Android.
