What can you say about St. Petersburg State University ITMO?
I am going to enter the above university this year, in connection with which a reasonable question arose: is it as good as it is painted? On the Internet every now and then I come across negative reviews like “I expected better” and the like.
From the directions so far I have looked after "Information systems and technologies", "Information security" and "Infocommunication technologies and communication systems", respectively, the faculties of FCTiU or FITiP.
And how is it in comparison with the GUAP and the Polytechnic?

I don’t know about other departments, but I don’t advise BIT, there is no education there.
At one time, I myself chose between the Polytechnic FTK and ITMO (FKTiU, FITiP). Went to both universities. I didn’t have enough points for FITiP, I was offered to rewrite mathematics. But for some reason I chose the Polytechnic University. I went there in February.
Since my class was in Physics and Mathematics, and at the moment half of the class is studying at ITMO, and a friend is at the Polytechnic University, I can tell you what's what.
At my Polytechnic University I study at the IMS, in principle I am satisfied with almost everything. But, it is worth saying that some teachers are not at all interested in the subject they teach. The equipment is partly outdated already 10 years ago. But the pluses can undoubtedly be called a good technical base. Mathematics, probability theory (oh Cherkesov N.G.), computational mathematics and optimization methods, all this is at a high level. I can say with confidence that you will know the hardware of very many sections. Programming is, but not enough. But I think it lends itself to self-study.
To be honest, ITMO does not like the points system, but this is my personal opinion. And so, in general, almost everything is the same, only here is the mat. They have fewer items. Well, many of my friends complain that self-education reigns there.
In principle, everything that I remembered immediately.
He helped several guys from ITMO to catch up with programming. I won’t say that the education is of high quality, since many things are simply omitted, although they are quite important in terms of practice.
Compared to SUAI:
At SUAI, I know a fifth-year student who made a very good impression of their university. Not that he outlined it well, but proved the fundamental nature of many knowledge and the breadth of the review in the field. There is also a good laboratory in which, if desired, you can get an internship in parallel with your studies.
Unfortunately, there are no friends from the Polytechnic University at the IT faculties.
I studied at ITMO at CT (the legendary department of Parfenov) as a bachelor, and went to a master's program at another faculty (KTiU). My opinion about ITMO:
1. Only those who want to learn are taught at ITMO. You can score on everything, skip all the couples, hand over debts up to the defense of your diploma, no one will expel you. You can, on the contrary, go to everything and participate in training in the Olympiad Programming in the evenings (this is only for CT).
2. ITMO has a lot of idiotic bureaucracy and window dressing. The rector is a member of United Russia, so before the elections everything is sealed with calls to support him or Putin.
3. There are few sensible subjects at ITMO. In the CT undergraduate course, several courses (algorithms, complexity theory, theory of formal languages, parallel programming, C ++ and some others) were read at a serious level with serious requirements, the rest of the subjects are either idiotic memorization (Matan and Parfyonov), or something slurred, when you teacher at the exam will explain the answer to the ticket.
4. Get ready to be looked at like shit, especially on CT scans. Parfyonov will never honor you with an answer to your “hello”, the dean’s office will be rude to you, and teachers in serious subjects will not respect you at all (for example, you can assign a retake to half of the group, put you in the office to prepare, and leave for Peterhof for the closing holiday fountains and not warn anyone).
5. Master's program at VT (Department of Computer Engineering) turned out to be a waste of time for me. I went there because I wanted to learn a new field (FPGA programming), but I got a lot of bureaucracy, "innovation management" and complete indifference from everyone. I studied the FPGA, but at an amateur level. It would be possible to study the same thing on your own in half a year without any master's degree.
In summary: at least something is taught in undergraduate studies, especially in the first three years of CT. In the magistracy, they teach almost nothing (even at CT, judging by the reviews of those who remained there).
My advice: if you want to mow down from the army, go to ITMO. If you want a serious education, go abroad. If you couldn’t go abroad right away - go to CT, upgrade your skills and then go abroad.
There is an opinion in our faculty that only Parfyonov’s department is strong in IT at ITMO. But it is not very easy to enter there, you need to take care of this much in advance.
If you want to have contacts among promising IT students, plus a lot of free time for self-development, I advise PKS / IPM (factory KTiU). But according to the curriculum, everything is sad there. There is much more study at VT, and, in general, there is also more useful information.
At ITiP, not in 38/39 groups, studies, according to reviews, do not shine with interest and study load.
And further. The name of the specialty weakly correlates with the information and its relevance in the curriculum. If you want to figure out what you will be taught, go to the department, I think they will go to a meeting and tell you in general. Well, be sure to ask students, success!
I will add darkolorin . I myself also studied at the Polytechnic University, at the department of IBCS (Information Security of Computer Systems) and I can tell you mainly about it.
They give everything related to computer security, from the history of viruses to the programming of these viruses.
Strong Course in C Programming P.V. Semyanova, cryptography E.B. Makhovenko, artificial intelligence M.O. Kalinin, according to the theory of computer threats V.V. Platonov. They talk a lot about methods for combating various computer threats, as well as a lot about how to use these threats. A lot of programming, including under *nix. There used to be Java, now I don't know.
Plus, if desired, the possibility of student part-time work in one of the friendly companies.
In general, knowledge is quite competitive and extensive.
Yes, ITMO wins Olympiads.
Yes, ITMO education is considered cool.
ITMO teaches Java at FITIP.
But!
Only a few thousand students go to the Olympiads.
If I'm not mistaken, then in recent years at FITIP 100% enrollment is for Olympiads (schoolchildren).
The choice is yours, although I would also like to go there.
If you can get into the Faculty of Parfenov (ITiP) with a degree in Applied Mathematics and Informatics, then you should go to ITMO. At the rest of the faculties, the usual bodyaga is waiting for you, as in all other universities of the country. Well, it will be difficult to get to Parfenov, unless of course you are the winner of the Olympiads.
As for the rest, ITMO is no better or worse than other universities.
It’s only worth understanding that Parfenov has only one strong group at the department, but they train it only for Olympiads, you have to dig for applied knowledge yourself (as, indeed, everywhere else).
In general, as in any university - how lucky. Compared to the SUAI, I would give preference to ITMO, with the Polytechnic University on an equal footing.
Only the Parfyonov department is strong at ITMO - it's true! In general, every year ITMO really only fails in terms of the level of study - and there is more and more PR, and the ITMO leadership has long been not interested in studying - if only to ensure the indicators by all truths and not truths !!! The salary of a teacher for 1 position at ITMO is 23-25 thousand per month, and basically all teachers switch to 0.5 and 0.25 positions - you can divide it yourself in monetary terms. Because on that full time - you really will lie down! Bet - life! ;) Think for yourself - who conducts classes for this money!!! Older teachers have retired or gone to another world! And if people on grants or on money 5 in 100 sat down, then they don’t need this teaching. Will a talented scientist or IT specialist teach you for 10 thousand per month???!!! Type in any well-known surname on the ITMO website in the Education section. Timetable of classes. According to the teacher - and you will see that they have no teaching load at all or its minimum. Let's even say associate professor of the department. KT Andrey Stankevich is one of the ITMO team leaders (winners of ACM ICPC) - he has one full day in his 2016 schedule Wednesday from 11 am to 5 pm and Thursday from 1240 pm to 3 40 pm! ALL!!! Well, how many people will he spud during this time - well, one stream (3-4 groups) at best !!! and even then only that stream will hear lectures ?! Therefore, there are fewer directions and disciplines in ITMO, and more and more verbiage! Undergraduate FITIP.
Very, very poor education. They recruit smart school graduates and only leave on this. This, comrade professors, is not education, this is the most stupid natural selection !!!
Students are treated like complete shit. In the dean's office, it is easy to catch the epithet "moron" in relation to oneself.
Teachers do not show up for classes, being late is the norm. A teacher running away from a student in the truest sense of the word is also the norm. Postponing exams the night before the exam is the norm. Overlapping consultations in one subject with exams in others is the norm.
Stupid scoring system, which even the teachers themselves do not adhere to. Points they forget to give. Accounts that are not posted. Exams that are forgotten to be entered in the information system. All around.
Instead of programming, FITIP is being pressured by physics, as if everyone has to defend a dissertation at the end of the semester. But programming practice is a stupid two-hour test for a programmer's certificate on the Microsoft website, the test is 100% passed in two hours, but the report needs to be done for 2 weeks on 10 sheets. At the same time, no one knows in what form the report should be, even the leaders and curators of the practice.
There is one normal teacher at the university - Mayatin. Everything else is rot and dullness.

Decision of the Academic Council of ITMO University dated December 26, 2017,
Results of research activities and training of scientific personnel in 2017 and tasks for 2018 of ITMO University.
“... 3. With a formal increase in the number of dissertations defended on time in 2017 (2017 - 82, 2016 - 78), over the past three years, there has been a decrease in the efficiency of ITMO University's postgraduate work (calculated by defenses against recruitment into corresponding year): 2017 - 25%, 2016 - 27%, 2015 - 32%. In 2017, it reached a critical value of 25%.
4. In 2017, three dissertations by ITMO University PhD students were withdrawn from consideration after the papers were accepted by dissertation councils.”
The efficiency of ITMO University's postgraduate work reached a critical value of 25% in 2017, and ITMO University was given the right to award academic degrees on its own! okay so
I'll add information:
"The head coach of the ITMO team is Associate Professor of the Department of Computer Technologies, Candidate of Technical Sciences Andrey Stankevich, who has trained more than one generation of athletes-programmers."
By the decision of the Academic Council of ITMO University dated February 5, 2018, protocol No. 2 Image of the mega-faculty of translational information technologies in 2022, the Department of Computer Technologies is being liquidated, like many other departments of ITMO University!
“2.1. liquidate:… 2.1.1.1. Faculty of Information Technology and Programming (717):
2.1.1.1.1. Department of Information Systems (117);
2.1.1.1.2. Department of Programming Technology (119);
2.1.1.1.3. Department of Computer Technologies (212)!! ... "
