What can you do with the linux (or OS X) terminal?

Basically, what can you do? In addition to navigating through directories, creating folders / files, renaming them, etc. ?
I only know, and I myself use the same nodejs (jade and stylus compilation) and bower.

Yes, almost everything (which does not require only a gui): working with text and images, working with the network and setting it up, etc. etc.
IMHO, it's easier to say what can't be done using the terminal.

I only use the console on Linux.
I don't use the GUI at all.

Basically, what can you do?

grep, download managers (wget, aria2c, etc.), console browsers (links, lynx, etc.), about downloading and installing from repositories, of course, console editors (nano, vim, etc.) , creating new users and groups, changing file and folder permissions, VCS (git, svn) and many, many other things.

A little more than what is possible in the GUI (not everything has a GUI)! And yes, in the terminal you can watch movies (mplayer \ vlc + aalib \ sdl), and listen to music (MPD), and drive in sauerbraten
