What are the possibilities to use web stack and cash register?

Decided to study the issue for interest. Has progress reached the point where you can connect a cash register to a server running PHP and knock out a check on command? Or we connect the cash register to the current computer and it sends a print command from JS through some kind of web API or extension?
If anyone knows, please share your stories. It is advisable to indicate the models of supported devices that are sold on a wide scale.
Upd: Plug & Play cases are of interest. I bought it, connected it, (well, I installed some kind of driver), opened the JS console and wrote something like:
MyPOS.sendTotalPrice(200);
And on the cash register a check of 200 rubles made its way.

I will say even more: if the device has a microprocessor - it can be connected to a PC and controlled!
The main issue is labor costs.
