What are the generally accepted standards for analyzing GPS movement statistics?

I am developing an application that will track the location of an employee per day. It turns out that several hundred coordinates will accumulate per day. Is there a generally accepted standard for processing this data into some kind of statistics? Where did you stay for a long time, what is the path between two stops, how long does it take to travel between stops, how long did you stand still, etc. Are there libraries that process an array of coordinates into a statistical format?
