What are the disadvantages of Windows 8.1 compared to Windows 7 from the point of view of a conservative desktop "power user"?

Sometimes it’s tempting to try (just out of curiosity and in order to “keep up with the train”) to feel the new application development technologies that appeared in Windows 8 (by the way, it was only the desire to use the new .Net framework that forced me to switch to Windows 7, and so XP completely suited and worked it is better). But fears torment and do not allow to install Windows 8.1 (do not offer dual boot or virtual machines - the screw in the laptop is not rubber). Concerns that the disappearance of the main menu button from the taskbar is not the only change that will not please me and which cannot be disabled. I ask you to dispel or confirm and specify my doubts.

From personal experience, I can say that you can install 8.1 calmly. And if something is missing, then you can make up for it with small utilities.
At the expense of the button, I do not see any problems. There are enough programs to return a full-fledged button, but I use StartMenuReviver and am quite satisfied.
PS- Of course, I understand that the screw is not rubber, but for a test on a virtual machine, everyone should have enough space. Then take it down if anything, but touch it with your hands.

Why are you all so attached to this launch? Do you use it every minute? We launched the necessary programs and everything, work. Like monkeys, by God: To get started, press the Start button, then Programs ... If there is no start button, then everything is a disaster, the algorithm fails. Learn to work with a computer, not like a computer.

nothing prevents you from backing up Windows 7 and personally "feeling" everything in Windows 8.1

There is one thing that is not comfortable. I fix the taskbar vertically from the left edge, and at 7 it worked fine for me to minimize all windows when I clicked on the bottom edge of the panel, but at 8 I need to try not to throw it to the tiled interface. There is of course Win + D, but somehow I got used to the mouse already.
