There are online.
Cloud office.com from Microsoft, in the browser (it even works on android tablets), with free limits and an almost one-on-one interface with the desktop one. I know for sure that they advertised their software for private organizations with the same functionality but without the need to be connected to the Internet.
There is from Google, but compatibility with Microsoft documents is weak, offline versions with reservations (I'm not sure that they will allow you not to merge documents into the cloud)
OpenOffice seems to have covered itself, but its descendant LibreOffice continues to develop, which in the latest version 7.x has become quite usable. Many people like it more than Office from Microsoft. Is there a portable option in LibreOffice - I don't know, I never needed it.
There is also a Chinese-made WPS Office - like LibreOffice, also free. In use, it behaves suspiciously, so after the test I demolished it.
