What are the alternatives to Windows Messenger?

We have Windows Messenger 5.1 configured in our office to communicate within the network. The problem with this messenger is that it crashes on new OSes, but the admin does not want to install something new (therefore, the question is: are there any alternatives to this messenger so that it works with Windows Messeger, I also saw network contacts and could exchange messages between Messenger and another program?
