A4Tech cameras will work with Ubuntu almost all but the NEWEST. I have A4Tech PK-30MU. Works without problems already in three generations of Ubuntu. Firewood is supported by the kernel.
I have a Logitech Webcam C270 HD.
In Ubuntu 10.04 and 9.10 it works right away, including the built-in microphone via USB.
Before buying, I found a mention that it works for someone in Ubuntu. Because all the same with a webcam you can not guess. I have some kind of Genius, bought 3-4 years ago. So it does not work in Ubuntu.
It seems that everything I saw clung without a tambourine, well, except for some Chinese noname, but it gave a terrible picture
I support, a good webcam, from the identified problems - in Ubuntu 10.10, if you turn it off and then reconnect it, the microphone does not work until the reboot. Although, I do not rule out that this is a problem specifically with my system.
I liked the chicony panda cameras. They work with a native uvc driver with support for high resolutions.
I'm not sure how things are with other cameras now, but I chose for more than an hour in the store and sadly looked at the fact that almost all of them either required a driver for interpolation, or did not have any information about the real performance characteristics on the box.
My Chicony Panda DC-7120 honestly produces 1280x1024, and there is a model even with 1600x1200.
Generally, it supports 160x120, 176x144, 320x240, 352x288, 640x480, 1280x1024.
Unless I don’t like the case - the mount is not very successful.
Photo example.
Well, fps is quite dependent on lighting, this photo was taken with poor video and it was about 5-7 fps. With good promises to issue up to 15.
I tried many cameras, but settled on the Microsoft VX700. 0.3 megapixels, but the picture is sharp and contrasty. In Skype, if 640x480 rises, then in general a super image! The microphone is working fine. Autofocus is available. In Ubuntu, starting from 8.04, it works without complaints and tambourines. The main price is 800 rubles. I changed all A4tech and canyon, which even cost me more, to this Microsoft :)

Something like this. Of course, this is not a complete list, and it is not relevant for all distros, but if the camera is supported in ubuntu, then it will be possible to fasten it to another distribution by almost 100%
