Watching videos under WinXP with auto volume control - is it possible?
Modern films about 15 years ago have taken the fashion to make very different volume levels in dialogues and in all sorts of explosions-chases.
That is, you listen to the dialogue, the volume is set, then suddenly there is an explosion-chase, and you have to turn down the volume so that the neighbors do not knock. Then back the dialogue, turn up the volume.
Speakers are stereo.
Is it possible in principle, and are there any programs for viewing avi / mkv that would equalize the volume level automatically? To be able to set the maximum volume.

Try enabling "Normalization" in Media Player Classic 's settings
Some sound cards, even not expensive ones, have SVM - Sound Volume Management in their drivers.
If you use a directshow player (90% of Windows players), then install ffdshow, and there you can process the audio in real time as you like, including normalization (also called a limiter or a decrease in dynamic range)
