VPN on a virtual machine?

1. What if I turn on VPN on the main machine, and then open a virtual machine and go online, will VPN work there?
2. And if I run it on a virtual machine and go online on the main machine, will VPN work there?

I would have tested it myself, but my netbook browser barely pulls, I doubt that the virtual machine will pull.

2 no, the network stack of the virtual machine does not affect the host (by the way, bread and butter is an unsuccessful metaphor);
1 is possible only if the virtual machine is given a network through NAT relative to the host, and even in this case it is not a fact, it depends on the settings.

@boglick

You can put it on a VPS server and everything will be fine (try the free period on Xelent, it's convenient)
