VPN connection on Ubuntu, bridge to LAN?

There is a remote office, there is a VPN server, there is an account for connection. I have Ubuntu. I need to connect to the VPN and work as if I'm on the local network of the remote office.
I tried to do this through the network settings panel in Ubuntu-e, it connects, but the connection breaks after a while, while the Internet also breaks.
What is the best way to do this and is it possible at all.

Check if the VPN server or link configuration is forcing a default route on you? In this case, all system packets, even those intended to service the VPN connection to the office, will be sent through the VPN connection interface, resulting in a completely down network on your machine.
You can always add a separate route for the VPN server so that packets for it go through your main link.
