Visual Studio and MS SQL on a virtual machine?

Has anyone had experience running Visual Studio and MS SQL in a virtual machine?
I'm wondering if everything will lag a lot or not.
I need these 2 things to demonstrate the project and I wanted to merge everything into a virtual machine, configure and demonstrate everything there.
