Vim and Ubuntu 11.04 - working with the Unity GUI clipboard?

It came as an unpleasant surprise to me that the usual commands for working with the X11 graphics system clipboard (via the + register) do not work in Unity. Has anyone encountered such a problem, and how did you solve it?

The problem is solved by itself after installing GVim. The "+" case starts working as it did in GTK and console versions of Vim.
