Using the init command when installing Yii2?

Do I understand correctly that the functionality of the init command is used only when installing Yii2 advanced?
That is, we executed this command, the files were copied in places from the environments directory, and we can safely delete this directory and files associated with init?
Or will this functionality be useful when transferring to a production server, since there is a choice between choosing a production or development environment?
