I had a need to test the performance of some of the compression algorithms I developed. Can I download movies or series from the network and check the effectiveness of the algorithm on them? Wouldn't that be a violation of some laws?

On vimeo.com you can find a bunch of videos under free licenses, even on the rutracker they put up copyright distributions of films;
