Unread messages in React chat?

Hello.
There is a chat for several people. The client part is written in React, the backend is django, and the Centrifuge server is used for distribution.
How to notify the user that there are unread messages in the chat? what is the best scheme?
Create a json field for each message, and insert users there who have not yet read the message?
Or is everything much simpler?)
