Ubuntu for the Housewife:
1. Click the rightmost icon on the menu bar and select System Preferences.
2. In the Hardware section, click Power.
3. Set the drop-down menu next to When the lid is closed to Do nothing.
This is exactly how it works when setting up, as OnYourLips wrote. The screen is locked, but does not go to sleep.
Ubuntu 15.04, on 14.10 it was the same.
