But it's not clear how to run this purely in the terminal. For this question, how to run a program window without a full-fledged KDE?

1. Why do you need Kubuntu? According to KDE, you have it. To do this, the usual openbox-type WM is enough - you install the minimum ubuntu (server, for example) and roll Xs, openbox and everything you need there.
