Tweets bring down the server

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.

There is a virtual server under KVM. It runs a bunch of Apache + Nginx.

A news site is running on the server. Under each article there are buttons of social networks, including Twitter.

The bottom line is that if someone tweets an article, Apache starts eating more and more processor resources until either the server crashes or Apache is restarted.

What could it be? How to fight? Thank you.

Temporarily turn on access logs and tweet the article yourself.
Maybe twitter is trying to preview the link and inadvertently steps on some Achilles heel of yours like a circular redirect or something. Logs should shed light on what exactly.

Most likely the reason is not in the tweeter plugin. Since the front-end plugin cannot affect the server-side.
