TimeCapsule = Airport Extreme + external HDD?

Actually there was a question in the choice of the Makovsky router. Overpaying for a capsule is not very desirable, despite the fact that the new generation had problems with cooling (due to which the capsule stopped distributing Wi-Fi).
I know that the network wireless filling in both devices is identical and that you can connect an external hard drive to the Airport Extreme and get access to it.
So the question is: is the statement " TimeCapsule = Airport Extreme + external HDD" correct ? Is it possible to backup using Time Machine in the case of Airport and what are the advantages of one device over another in conjunction with an external hard drive? Is such savings advisable if there is already a hard :)

Expedient, but not aesthetically pleasing :) You can make a backup.

I don't think it's the same at all.
In case of ae+hdd you will connect the hard drive via usb . And the final speed of work may not satisfy you.
Actually, it’s generally a dead number to connect hard drives via usb to routers - it all works too slowly. There are many reasons - this is the lack of router resources to work with it and crooked drivers for usb under Linux for routers, etc. Not enough for torrents, or even to watch a movie. Usually buy a NAS in this case.
I doubt that Airport Extreme is special in this regard. You need to check, of course, but right off the bat in a couple of reviews I saw references to the low speed of connecting an external hard drive.
Time Capsule- in its own way, a special device - a combined NAS + WiFi Router . If you have an external hard drive, then add the cost of the box / NAS for it.
