Judging by the symptoms, you have the integrated video card listed as the video source in your BIOS.

I would do this:
1. Take another vga or dvi cable (choose the right one)
2. Does the GPU heatsink heat up?
3. With one inserted card (faulty), will there be an image?
4. How does the failed card behave on another PC?
5. When booting in safe mode or LIve CD \ USB, is there an image from the failed card?
