The motherboard only supports 4 GB of RAM, is it possible to do more?

I want to take a second-hand lga 775 motherboard for cheap to put a xeon e5450, + 8 GB OP there.
The motherboard I want to take only supports 4 gigabytes, I heard that you can update the BIOS and it will be possible to install more, is this true, and how do I know if this is true for my motherboard.
