Take the best of DD-WRT, Tomato firmware
It was necessary to make a permanent, stable connection to the Internet via a USB 3G modem. Debian6.
The thought of firmware for routers immediately came to mind - excellent components (crutches) were assembled and debugged there:
- universal compatibility with "all" USB 3G modems;
- stable operation on this connection, i.e. restoration of communication;
- rebooting the USB host, which helps to "revive" the connection in some cases;
- and all this in automatic mode
Maybe someone has already transferred from the firmware? Maybe someone knows will write clearly what needs to be transferred? I don’t need a theory, I’m specific, the theory is clear, I’m trying to minimize the time for this task.

Everything that you described is done there with stupid scripts, in your case it’s easier for you to write your own, well, or stupidly take the firmware and copy the scripts you need, it takes five minutes.
Take ubuntu under it, my modems work, in debian I would not be so sure.
