System drive C: became pristine in the morning, how is this possible?
Actually the situation is this.
left the PC overnight (as usual).
it had windwos 10 1809. in the morning I was greeted by an error in the boot sector.
During diagnostics, it turned out that the system disk became pristine. it was a samsung 850 evo. seems to be a pretty reliable model.
this is the first time with me. backup helped out on the topic of files. but the software and settings are tormented then to do.
The question is how to avoid this in the future? and what could it possibly be? For the first time in 14 years of communication with windows, I encounter this.

the answer is very simple: the shield haspens and backups - they rule.
and if you do not have regular backups in at least two spaced locations, sooner or later you will find yourself in you know where.
And a number of standard questions:
Is the firmware of the SSD fresh? (controller glitches)
SMART does not show nasty things like growth of UDMA errors? (SATA cable falls off)
There's also the possibility that some nasty thing started Secure Erase just for fun.
Great question! I bookmarked it, it will be something to prove to fans to defend the "reliability" of ssd)
Answering your question, this happens with SSD, and often. Most likely, another controller bug or just something flew there. Do not look at smart, SSDs almost always fly with good smart and completely unexpectedly. Therefore, only backups + the absence of important data on the SSD, and the cloud.
Just recently came across something similar. There was a hack and the system disks were simply encrypted. Windows started to load properly from the boot partition, but I didn’t see the disk from: and so the recovery went around
Everyone who uses a PC is divided into two categories, those who do backup and those who already do
After I lost pictures of a child for 3 years, I always make a double backup. Firstly, I bought Google One for $ 9 2GB and in this folder I store everything important, photos, scans, projects, etc. In addition, the same folder goes to a local backup every day. There is a separate disk for this. For Macs, Time Machine is best. For Windows, there are free solutions https://biblsoft.ru/windows/system/backup - this is enough to quickly deploy. Invest in a separate drive for copies. In general, can I use the free plan of Google One? if 15 GB is enough for you.
