Tell me why StartSSL™ is so cheap? Is there something wrong with him? Is there any underwater rake when using its certificates?

Just a smaller office than tavte/verisine. Certificates are less valid, i.e. their root CA is not available in all browsers.

funny. Tried to register, then login. it was not possible to get to auth.startssl.com/ , Firefox says ssl_error_handshake_failure_alert, other browsers repeat the same thing, but in their own words.
I wouldn’t risk it, especially since, for example, godaddy has comparable prices for certificates (if you forget about the wildcard)

Passed the first circle of hell , the stage of checks - confirmed the identity.
I talked to support (we needed additional documents confirming the address of residence and phone number). There were (for me) difficulties with proving the phone - I don’t have a single invoice and contract for the phone - the SIM card came by mail, I replenish it at an ATM. They got very upset. We got out of the situation like this: I sent (by e-mail) an invoice to my home phone and they called him. They asked standard security questions (in English, of course) such as date of birth, etc. on the passport (scan of the passport and driver's license was sent by the form upon request). Paid with PayPal. All together, with correspondence, calls, etc., a couple of hours passed from the moment of registration to receipt of confirmation of identity verification. So far I'm happy with the process. I am going to continue obtaining a certificate for the company - I will describe it here.

I didn’t notice any pitfalls, in general I would like to say a big thank you to the office for free valid certificates. For example, it’s inconvenient to organize the same cloud with some owncloud via https without a certificate, either only http, or warnings, but here I set and forgot the problem and a beautiful green line or a lock in the browser, so for yourself or some corporate micro solutions must have.
I also do the entrance to the admin panel and order pages with a certificate, there were no breakdowns. The only problem I encountered was the mail certificate; if I sign them, then apple mail swears at the left signature (and it seems not only he, in my opinion Yandex also gave out discontent, but it is necessary to check), although my own curvature may be to blame.
I recommend trying it, besides, for the Free version, the entire registration will take 5-10 minutes.
