Sprites or font awesome?

Sprites

The site has about half of the icons, you can do it in pure css and font awesome, and half is better to make a sprite. But is it worth it to bother and make sprites there, and font awesome there? The icons are small and anyway, even though the file will weigh a little more, it's still the same one ftp request. How would you advise to do it?
And can you tell me how to check the site loading speed, in my opinion this can be done in chrome in the developer tools in the Timeline?
