Spring MVC vs Struts vs JSF?

Due to the abundance of different technologies, I'm a little confused. Tell me, please, is it correct to compare Spring MVC, Struts and JSF with each other? As far as I understand, all these are front-end frameworks and, roughly speaking, are interchangeable. If so, is it possible to write a backend, say in Spring, and connect frameworks to this backend?
