Sphinx searchd won't start, what's wrong?

Greetings!
The problem is the following - the searchd daemon does not start after restarting vps (the process does not see ps aux).
Manually, the daemon starts normally.
/etc/rc.local :
/usr/bin/searchd --config /etc/sphinxsearch/sphinx.conf
exit 0
also created /etc/init.d/searchd with start|stop|restart commands (google has examples) , didn't help
also tried to add launch via crontab,
debian7-x86 system didn't help either
what could be wrong?

touch /var/run/sphinxsearch/searchd.pid
