The SQL being executed was:

well, and the sphinx do you have a version of this one? Sphinx 2.2.11 right?

Probably no longer relevant, but in my case, without the ability to touch the mysql configuration, the issue was resolved by reducing the value of mem_limit in the sphinx configuration.
