Sitemap on a different domain - is this normal?

I don't feel comfortable keeping the sitemap at the root. I have it on Amazon S3, robots.txt contains a link to the file. The SEO is not happy... is he right?
Is it necessary to have a map at the root?

Translation from here www.sitemaps.org/protocol.html#location The
location of the sitemap file determines the set of URLs you can include in it. For example, a sitemap located at the address http://domain.com/catalogue/sitemap.xml
can contain any URL that starts with http://domain.com/catalogue/, but cannot contain URLs that start withhttp://domain.com/news/
