installing xdebug, which is called "niasilil". Is it really worth it, or is there something simpler and more practical?

there are many other ways.
but ixdebug / similar ones are still worth stepping over and mastering - they allow you to debug the code without littering it with debug code / debug info.
in a third-party debugger there is nothing atypical and archaic. not familiar? Yes. hard at first? Yes. but once you roll in, you don't want to look at anything else.
