Simple Chat (for Windows or web-based)
You need to find a chat, as communication is not very good in dropbox.
We tried IRC and chat on bat-files, the first one is quite difficult to set up quickly, besides, it has quite a lot of functionality, you need one room, it does not display notifications for new messages.
There were problems with the chat on bat files due to the specifics of the dropbox operation - if someone writes to the chat for about 30 seconds, a conflict arises (as in SVN), so a second file with the history is created, and the message is not displayed.
So now we need something simple for communication in a group.
Requirements: you need the easiest to install on your computer (or register) - ideally, just choose a nickname and start chatting. One room, all sorts of stray like emoticons are not needed. It would be nice to have a tray notification, but not required.

Why not Jabber? You can raise your server, you can use the existing ones. If you need security, you can look for encryption plugins for different messengers.
A very handy feature of Network Assistant, in addition to the chat there is a (general) graphic board. But only for the local network :(, you will need a VPN to work via the Internet.
Make a ready-made build of the IRC client and don't suffer.
Dmess chat - www.softportal.com/software-5146-dmess.html
The interface is similar to the old ICQ, emoticons from Kolobok
