Should I use Virtual Machine?

At work I have firewood: Celeron E3200 2.4GHz. 3GB RAM (DDR2), built-in video card.
The PC slows down and infuriates me, the authorities do not approve of the demolition of Windows and the installation of some lightweight Linux distribution.
The question is - is it worth installing VM and Linux in the hope of better performance, or vice versa there will be fewer resources under Linux and it will turn out even worse?
