Should I switch to Ubuntu Unity?
Hello!
I've been using Linux Mint for the third year (now with MATE), now I decided to try pure Ubuntu
Question for Unity users - what is it like now? I want to try something new, ready to get used to it for a long time. But is it worth it?

If the decision to change DE is made, then it is definitely necessary to switch.
Unity can be considered a complete shell with its own individual characteristics. For example, I really like Canonical's desire to save space by merging the top bar with the title bar of a maximized window. Perhaps I was looking badly, but I have not seen such a solution in other shells.
Yes, Unity has glitches. Yes, it consumes more memory than many opponents. Yes, many decisions are unusual, and something in general can be annoying at all. But in general, I repeat, this is a DE ready for daily use. The only bug that annoys me at the moment (14.04) is switching the keyboard layout. It hasn’t been cured since 12.10, you have to use a patch (either a patch of a curve, or the system itself behaves that way, but now when switching layouts, some input fields lose focus, you have to reach for the mouse).
If we talk further about alternatives to Mate, then you can consider the latest versions of Gnome - the guys there do not waste time. I would be glad to switch to it myself, but this "combining panel" ... you quickly get used to it, and already in other shells you feel sorry for the wasted vertical space.
I also use Mint (periodically), although Unity is a beautiful and original environment, but unfortunately, there are still some drawbacks, for example, in some full-screen applications, you cannot switch the language layout, i.e. after launching the application, you have to use the language that was selected before launching the application, otherwise the environment is quite convenient, configured out of the box.
There are two environments that, in my opinion, deserve respect - Unity and Pantheon (EOS). But Unity is more gluttonous.
Personally, I really like Unity, first of all because it makes one panel out of three panels (header with a cross, main menu, system top with some applets). Also a bunch of effects available in CompizConfig (some additional ones need to be delivered manually). But I must agree that I'm arrogant: I used to eat mostly up to 100 MiB of RAM, and now ~ 300. I don't feel sorry for her, but it might not work for you. And perhaps you will not put this effect and there will be a little.
It's definitely worth a try. However, before using, read a short manual about the capabilities of this DU to avoid misunderstandings.
Wednesday is very convenient! I myself got hooked on the unity with the release of 12.04 - it more or less worked there.
Killer features: Saving space on the monitor (launcher + global menu), HUD !!!, convenience - all controls are shifted to the upper left corner (dash, window control, menu), setting for monitors with high resolution sparkling ...
