Should an online store in 2020 rely on SEO optimization as its main source of customers?

I'm from Ukraine. Yandex is blocked in us, so we only take Google into account.
I think in the direction of a niche independent online store. Paid advertising often does not pay off, so there is hope for SEO. And I don’t even know if it’s worth relying on SEO optimization as the main source of customers? (I am not an expert in SEO)

Google has changed the design of the issue, and instead of the first 2-3 advertising tabs on the 1st page of the issue, there are now 4 tabs that have become more similar to the ads from the SEO issue. Now the probability is higher that the potential client will click on the advertisement. Thus, Google emphasizes the importance of advertising, and attaches less importance to SEO. Google puts an emphasis on paid advertising and encourages sellers to use paid advertising.

Seo is important, of course, but the latest trends are driven by competent SMM and a good advertising strategy with a system of discounts / promotions / bonus points, etc., to attract potential customers. Well, contextual advertising, of course, which will bring a real client with real requests.
Always put yourself in the place of the client - well, you will see that some kind of no-name online store is in the first position, and you don’t know anything about it, you don’t know whether it will be profitable for you to buy something there or not. And so on Instagram, the buyer sees a beautiful picture, hence the desire, hence the motivation to go to your website and place an order. Because people buy with their eyes first. In addition, through social networks you are open to customers, get real reviews and actually create loyalty to your store.

The need to constantly generate ideas inside the site, usability, tests, global analytics. The cheapest and most targeted channel has been and will be email. But point trigger tuning is not quick or easy. First of all, it is the result of understanding who your customer is. Sometimes SEO traffic is more expensive than context, everything is individual. That is, it is a lottery ticket of its own kind, which can work. Therefore, it is better to pay for advertising in Google and it is interesting for him to show you, and then it is interesting for you to pay when you are guaranteed to see yourself in the TOP.

SEO isn't really free either, if you want to do it effectively. As a channel for attracting customers, it is one of the best. The costs will depend on what you are selling (your niche) and what state the site is in right now. If you are just planning a website, then I recommend that you immediately order a technical specification for its creation from SEO specialists.
Usually a bunch of SEO + PPC goes well.
If you need pure sales, you can still try to move through aggregators and marketplaces. For repeat sales - develop SMM and Email newsletters.

Weird question. It is worth it if competent specialists do it and there are enough internal pages. Ideally, use all possible traffic channels, as competition is growing, and the client is becoming more and more spoiled. Also, the process of working on the site never stop, refine, improve, test...

I ran a simple site with one product and did minimally working SEO. Its whole problem is that it is difficult to measure and understand when it works, unlike advertising. Here you can read about my experience.
I also worked in a marketing agency and we sawed CRM for placing ad blocks on client sites and the manager said that no company ever guarantees traffic from SEO. But you need to do it at least at a basic level, because it is a promotion tool.
