Serial connection of batteries, what's the problem?

Hello) There is such a question: There are 8 batteries connected in series, each with a capacity of 1200 mAh, at 1.2V and 2A. When connecting them in series, I measure the current at the ends of the battery pack with a multimeter and it gives out 16 A. How can this be if the connection is serial?
